Amazon Kindle Worlds first emailed me on March TENTH. SEVEN months ago.. it’s all too much that launch day is finally here. I’m gonna go hide somewhere… 🔥 🔥 🔥 shit. This is my world. I can’t hide. Ok. Here they are, story seekers. The first ten One True Mate Kindle World stories that have ever existed! <3 <3 Launch 1!!!! 🐺 What now?
my love to all my readers. thank you for everything 💞💞💞 🐺🐻
Hello, hello, HELLO, Lisa Ladew fans! I hope you are all having a
fantastic day! My name is Savan Robbins and Lisa asked me to write a
little something to tell y’all about an AH-MAY-ZING and exciting new
project she has coming up! Can you guess what it is?? No? Then I’ll
Amazon has authorized a Kindle World collection for her One True Mate series!
Isn’t that awesome? Of course it is!!
*record scratch* Ok, so for those of you who are scratching your head
like “Whaaatt??” and have no idea what a Kindle World is, I’ll break
it down for you:
A Kindle World collection is a selection of books that are written by
a group of authors where the characters, circumstances and/or
references are set in another author’s book universe. So, in laymen’s
terms: it’s like fan fiction, written with the author’s permission, by
a bunch of other authors. And it’s epic!! (Lisa’s note, amazon-sanctioned fan fiction.) here’s an example: Celia Kyle’s More than Mated World
For example, I was asked to contribute to the collection (and I am SO
excited, beeteedubs) and the main characters of my book are Mac and
Bruin, aka The Bearmance of the Century. Other authors may choose
other characters from the series proper or they may have brand new
characters. They may also use characters from their own books that
will exist in the OTM universe within their stories or simply
reference information from it. In this, their stories may (and most
likely will) deviate from the actual OTM storyline, because it is an
author interpretation – as none of us live in Lisa’s head, so there’s
NO way any of us could give it justice with complete accuracy. That
and none of us have psychic, mind-reading powers…well, none that I
know of yet, anyway.
So as you read, you may see characters, terms, or circumstances you
recognize as an OTM fan, but they may not line up with the actual
storyline as it already exists, but it is our sincere hope that you
will still enjoy the stories!
Lisa is excited and so are all the authors she hand-picked to be a
part of this fun and awesome project! We are having a great time
writing them and we hope you have just as much fun reading them!
(Lisa’s note: It’s illegal for authors to write stories using other author’s characters, settings, and premises. But Kindle Worlds makes it legal, extends them permission to use my characters and premise, and encourages them to do so.)
NOTE!!!!! Authors do not have control over pricing of books in Kindle worlds, and as of yet they can’t be in Kindle Unlimited, AND, it will be a bit harder for our readers outside of the U.S to get their hands on them. SORRRY! We will have a work around for International readers and hopefully KU is coming.
If you are interested in reading within other PNR authors’ Kindle worlds, here’s some for you!
Eliza Gayle Southern Shifters Kindle World, Milly Taiden Paranormal Dating Agency Kindle World, S.E. Smith’s Magic New Mexico Kindle World, Grayslake More Than Mated Kindle World , Milly Taiden Sassy Ever After Kindle World
I was going to wait until after the eclipse craziness to share this here, but I guess it’s going on all day, moving across the country. It’s almost over here in Oregon. It was cool.
ANYWAY, Today is the one year anniversary of the day One True Mate 1 was published!!! I want to share just a little bit about how this series came to be, and how it has changed my life. I was on a trip to Great Wolf Lodge in Washington (this was when we lived in Idaho) in February of 2016 and was reading JR Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series. I think I was on book 2 or 3. I remember being BLOWN AWAY by her books and thinking to myself, “THIS WORKS IN ROMANCE?!?!?”
At that time, I had been writing romantic suspense, cops and firefighters and paramedics and military, because that’s what I knew best. (hubby was a cop, we both were army medics, I was a paramedic, police dispatcher, and a volunteer firefighter, but that was all a long time ago).
I didn’t grow up reading romance. I grew up reading horror. Stephen King, Dean Koontz type of books. I loved Harry Potter, too, of course, but after my first son was born, I stopped reading fiction for 10 years. I couldn’t read the horror anymore. It hurt my heart (I got really sensitive after he was born, couldn’t watch the news anymore, etc) and so I just stopped reading. It left a definite hole in my life.
Then I discovered romance. Fun! But I definitely gravitated to suspenseful romance. I read a few dark romances, but they werent’ my thing. Neither were the bad boy romances (I like my men to be sweet badasses) or contemporary romances or sweet romances. I liked romantic suspense and military romance so I started writing it (Edge of the Heat 1 was my first book, published January 21st, 2014. I was 41 years old and had a 1 year old baby)
I wrote Heat, Hide Me, Unauthorized, and had started on Kink. I was considering doing a kind of suspenseful BDSM series, had even started lightly plotting it. I was still casting around, looking for my THING.
So then I read JR Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood about badass vampires, my first PNR, and I was hooked. I knew I had found MY THING.
Looking back, I never once thought, “I wonder if I can do this.” I never once faltered or questioned myself. I knew I had been born to write PNR, now that I knew what it was. Anette King can probably tell you more about that time. I think I PMed her on the way home from Great Wolf Lodge and said, “I am going to write Black Dagger Brotherhood for Shifters!!” And she said, “Ok, let’s start brainstorming!”
The only thing was, I had never read a shifter book. So that’s where the babes in my group, Books, Babes, and Badasses came in. I asked them endless questions about PNR tropes, what they preferred, etc. Amanda Quiles went above and beyond, sending my pictures, telling me about the claiming bite, etc.
I started thinking about OTM in a very hazy way in February 2016, then started plotting in April, even though I was writing a Kink book, and really couldn’t take the time (income falls for indies if they go too long between releases). Sometime that summer, I started writing it.
It was a big deal. Biggest book I had ever tried to write. And well beyond my abilities. But I did my best. I put it on preorder, didn’t say much about it, but just kept working on it, then it came out on August 21st of 2016. And people liked it a LOT. Not everyone of course, but enough that I knew right away I had done something good.
Here were my personal rules that I started with:
1) there had to be a lot of single guys that worked together and would somehow be drawn to live together over the course of the story
2) they had to interact like the cops and firefighters and military I knew so well interacted – lots of teasing and friction but true camaraderie at the same time
3) once a woman showed up, they had to be sweet as pie to her and never even say a cross word to her. (LOL!!!! I wish my husband would read this)
4) they had to be true protectors and Alphas. Every one of them. Strong. Go-getters. Willing to protect anyone with their lives.
OTM1 was a huge success. OTM2 was even bigger, even though I don’t think the book is as strong. OTM3 did great, although I have seen series readership falloff there, I think because of the premise (He’s seen his fated mate die a hundred times, even though they’ve never met) OTM4, I started hitting my groove. OTM5, I did some experimentation and got a lot of great feedback on what worked and what didn’t. OTM6, I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to pull off turning Bruin, who had been kind of goofy up till then, into an alpha readers would love, but it’s had the most positive comments to date. You all love you a sweet as honey bear.
I learn more with every single book I write, how to be a better writer and plotter, how to turn a word or phrase into magic, and how to pluck heartstrings like guitar chords. The magic is in the story, and I try to make each story better than the last, up to my current ability.
Now I’m working on OTM7. Harlan. He’s got some shit to go through. As much as I love to hear reader feedback and act on it, the story still comes to me a certain way, and some of you are going to be holding your breath in a few of the upcoming books.
I promise you I will never kill off a main character (the hero or heroine). I promise you that you will always get a happy ending. Anything other than those two things, well, anything can happen.
So, here we are. OTM is doing well. Thriving. It has made me moderately wealthy to the point where I don’t have to think so much about the money, which is a boon for any author. Now I’m just in it for the story.
There will be 13 books. Then I might take some time off to experiment with some edgier stuff, and then head into OTM Legacy, which will be the story after the current story. I love these characters too <3 <3 <3 SOOOO, we are celebrating!!! This is Day 1 of the otm-aversary and I am giving away OTM1 and a swag bag. We will have 13 days of prizes, each with a different book and a different, bigger prize. Day 13 winner will receive EVERY GIFT from the celebration, and EVERY BOOK in the series. Click on the rafflecopter link and enter there. And thank you, dear readers, from the bottom of my heart. I love my readers. A bunch of fun, feisty, tell-it-like it is women who make me smile every day. Thank you also, to the photogs, the models, my fellow authors, my assistants, and my cover and swag designers. The book world really is the best world to live in.
That’s Scott King on Graeme’s cover. The man can MOVE. I love looking at his pictures.
Graeme was an interesting character for me, and still is. He’s not in charge, but by virtue of who he is, how long he’s been around, and what his abilities are, he really should be, but he’s cool with not being, especially since Wade and Trevor treat him like an equal. He’s not a wolf, but he likes the wolves more than he thought he would. They are predators, like he is, and so he understands them.
He was supposed to be this unflappable character who never gets angry … but then he started to care. He didn’t want to care, but Heather gave him something to care about. He never in his life believed he would have his shot at love, at wyrmlings, and now that he does, he’s still counting his blessings. I’m interested to see what happens to him when his baby girl is born. I have an idea that certain worries are going to come to a head for him as she grows. Things he hasn’t been willing to look at in his instinctual joy over Heather’s pregnancy.
I have had a lot of people tell me the lava jizz was something new, that they had never seen that before in a book. If you have, please tell me where in a comment. I have no idea if I made it up or not. Ideas come from everywhere. … Someone said all writers are thieves, and I truly believe that. lol.
I would love to hear your thoughts on Graeme!
Bearen – bear shifters. Almost always work as firefighters.
Citlali – spiritual leaders of all shiften. They are able to communicate with the deities telepathically, and sometimes bring back prophecies from these communications.
Deae – goddess.
Dragen – dragon shifter. Rare.
Echo – an animal with the same markings of a shiften. Usually seen as a harbinger of bad things, but could also be a messenger from The Light.
Felen – big cat shifters. Almost always work as mercenaries. They are also the protectors of Rhen’s physical body and a specially trained group of them can track Khain when he comes into the Ula.
Foxen – the foxen were created when Khain forcibly mated with female wolven.
Haven, the – final resting place of all shiften. Where The Light resides.
Impot – a shiften that cannot shift because of a genetic defect caused by mating too close to their own bloodline. Trent and Troy are not thought to be impots because they were born during a klukwana.
Khain – also known as the Divided Demon, the Great Destroyer, and the Matchitehew. The hunter of humans and the main nemesis of all shiften.
Klukwana – a ceremony where a full-blooded shiften mates with another shiften with both in animal form, then the mother stays in animal form during the entire pregnancy. The young in the litter are always born as their animal. Wolven from a klukwana always come in at least four to seven young. Bearen are always two cubs, and felen are unpredictable, sometimes only one. Shiften born from a klukwana are almost always more powerful, bigger, and stronger than regular shiften, but many parents don’t try it because of the inherent risks to the mother during the (shorter) pregnancy and the risk that the shiften young may choose not to shift into human form. A lesser known possibility is that the shiften young will have a harder time learning to shift into human form, especially if no one shifts near them in the first few days after birth.
KSRT – Kilo Special Response Team, or Khain Special Response team. A group of wolven police whose primary goal is to hunt down and kill Khain, if that can be done.
Light, The – the creator of the Ula, humans, Rhen, Khain, and the angels.
Moonstruck – insane. Shiften who spend too long indoors or too long in human form can become moonstruck slowly and not even realize it.
Pravus – Khain’s home. A fiery, desolate dimension that sits alongside ours.
Pumaii – a small group of specialized felen tasked with tracking Khain when he crosses over into our dimension.
Renqua – a discoloration in a shiften’s fur which is also seen as a birthmark in human form. Every renqua is different. The original renquas were pieces of Rhen she put inside the wolves, bears, and big cats to create the shiften. Every pure-blooded shifter born since has also had a renqua. Half-breeds may or may not have one. Some foxen acquired weak renquas when they mated with shiften. Also called the mark of life.
Rhen – the creator of all shiften. A female deity.
Ruhi – the art of speaking telepathically. No humans are known to possess the power to do this. Not all shiften are able to do it. It is the preferred form of speaking for the dragen.
Shiften – shifter-kind.
Shiftsegen – a special blessing left for the one true mates by their father, a pendant that represents their angel half and the animal of their intended mate. The shiftsegen, powerful and unpredictable, will respond forthrightly only to a direct command by one of the One True Mates. Anyone else who asks something from them may get a response, but it may not be what they are looking for.
Ula – the Earth, in the current dimension and time. The home of the shiften.
Vahiy – end of the world.
Wolfen – a wolf shifter. Almost always works as a police officer.
Wolven – wolf shifters, plural.
Zyanya – when a wolfen dies, the funeral is for the benefit of humans, but the important ceremony is the zyanya. The pack mates of the fallen wolfen run in wolf form through the forest, heading north to show the spirit the way to the Haven. When they reach a body of water, they all jump in and swim to the other side, then emerge in human form.
Wednesday, 7-12 THE ENDDDD. Now to work on my continuity notes, edit through once, and send it out to my editor and betas, probably tomorrow night. As soon as a few get back to me with full edits, I hit pub and it’s all up to amazon. Late this weekend, early next week. … something like that. We’ll work hard on making it sooner rather than later
Sunday, 7/9 – it’s been a crazy week, and I’m two to three days out from being done. When it’s done, I have to edit, then send to my editors, then send to my betas, and then it is yours!!! One week or less <3 Saturday, 7/1 – definitely moving. getting close to the halfway mark. Things are getting complicated. Lots of stuff is happening with the other characters, not just bruin. things are getting crazy in serenity.
Sunday, 6/25 Moving now! 24,521 words. Bruin is quite a character. Still thinking the middle of July for release. I will let you know asap!!
Tuesday 6/20 you may be disappointed to hear i have not started writing. argh. this always happens. The plotting takes way longer than I want it to. BUT! You may be happy to know that I am starting tomorrow and my goal for tomorrow is 10K words. I can do it. I’ve done 13K before in a day, but that’s *too* hard. I can do the 10K though. I think I’ll be able to do it, I see the first 4 scenes in my mind like I want them, and that is the key ……. and Go! Check back in 24 hours!!
Thursday 6/15 I have been wrestling with marketing and emails all week, but always taking an hour or two in the morning to plot. OTM6 is gonna be good. Lots of secrets revealing themselves to me, slowly, which is how it works for me. I’m going to shoot for 80K words and I think it will be right around there. Plot is still loose but coming together. I told myself I would write the first 500 words today. I sat down, wrote 2 words, thought of a last name, and gave up again. Still have to think more. But the index cards came out, which is a great sign. With OTM7, instead of just dates, I will do Day 0, Day 1, etc, to track my progress. that is part of why I am doing this, so that I can spot the holes in my process (to speed it up). So no words written yet. Est release still mid-july, tho. Once it’s plotted, the writing is ancillary, but secondary. The plotting is where the real work is done.
Sunday 6/11 Document created for book. Check. 500 words written. NOPE. It’s OK. I know it seems like failure. It’s not. Because now I know how much I don’t know, and until I decide I am going to write some words, that doesn’t happen. What I’m doing now: brainstorming, plotting, a LOT of thinking. These books take hundreds of hours of thought before anything happens on the screen. So, I’ll shoot for 500 words on Tuesday (I’m taking tomorrow off to hang with my boys) and in the meantime, lots of thinking (and emails, marketing, catching up on editing past stuff, and thinking about parallel books).
Saturday 6/10. Did i say yesterday was thursday? … or did I actually post on thursday? I have no idea. I know today is Saturday and 6/10 so I guess that’s what matters. Bru’s book is gonna be sooooo goooood! I’m super excited about this story now. I am close to creating the doc and writing the first 500 words. …. I will do it today, I swear. Ok, off to it.
Thursday, 6/9. Bru’s book is loosely formed in my mind. I have been thinking about it around the corners of everything else I do. I have a probable final battle and many possible conflicts and one big event planned. I am also trying to loosely plot the rest of the series at the same time, because things are getting complicated. I hope to write the first 500 words tomorrow, but that means I will have to have it “told” enough in my brain that I know where to start. Guesstimated release: argh. mid July.
No conversation about any of my characters would be complete without discussing the criticisms I got about them. I probably shouldn’t do that, but I can’t help it, since I do believe characterization is my weakest writing skill (action being my strongest). So I pay attention!!
Ella was our first OTM found, and purportedly the strongest, because she was the first… ahem, how do I say this, “created.” lol. So the angel had sex with her mom first. As of yet, we have only seen a few manifestations of her power, although it is getting stronger, as you probably saw if you read the Epilogue to OTM5 (available to my newsletter subscribers, send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org if you are on my newsletter and didn’t get it)
The biggest criticism I got about Ella was she was kind of soft. Not strong enough. She’s supposed to be “queen”, whatever that means in this post-otm world, but she’s not strong enough to be any sort of “queen.” I get that. She wasn’t meant to be strong at first. She’s going to grow into it. Being Trevor’s mate will be the first part of that, and all these women uniting in her house will be the second part of that. She’s a natural caregiver, a nurturer, but when those babies show up (soon!) we will see a new side of her also. There’s nothing more important to her than family, so much so that she wouldn’t even let Shay rot in the Pravus, although I might have, if it had been me.
Which brings me to Shay. An editor asked me, “Why is Shay so hostile?” and all I could say was, we all know people like that, don’t we? If you don’t, you’re the lucky one, but Shay and Ella have a conflicted history, which will come to light a little more in future books. Sibling relationships can be that hostile, especially when there are secrets and animosities burning under the surface.
I would love to hear what you think about Ella, and what you are looking forward to in future books! <3 Watch book for lots of action and forward motion on some of these plot lines!
