No conversation about any of my characters would be complete without discussing the criticisms I got about them. I probably shouldn’t do that, but I can’t help it, since I do believe characterization is my weakest writing skill (action being my strongest). So I pay attention!!
Ella was our first OTM found, and purportedly the strongest, because she was the first… ahem, how do I say this, “created.” lol. So the angel had sex with her mom first. As of yet, we have only seen a few manifestations of her power, although it is getting stronger, as you probably saw if you read the Epilogue to OTM5 (available to my newsletter subscribers, send an email to email@example.com if you are on my newsletter and didn’t get it)
The biggest criticism I got about Ella was she was kind of soft. Not strong enough. She’s supposed to be “queen”, whatever that means in this post-otm world, but she’s not strong enough to be any sort of “queen.” I get that. She wasn’t meant to be strong at first. She’s going to grow into it. Being Trevor’s mate will be the first part of that, and all these women uniting in her house will be the second part of that. She’s a natural caregiver, a nurturer, but when those babies show up (soon!) we will see a new side of her also. There’s nothing more important to her than family, so much so that she wouldn’t even let Shay rot in the Pravus, although I might have, if it had been me.
Which brings me to Shay. An editor asked me, “Why is Shay so hostile?” and all I could say was, we all know people like that, don’t we? If you don’t, you’re the lucky one, but Shay and Ella have a conflicted history, which will come to light a little more in future books. Sibling relationships can be that hostile, especially when there are secrets and animosities burning under the surface.
I would love to hear what you think about Ella, and what you are looking forward to in future books! <3 Watch book for lots of action and forward motion on some of these plot lines!
